    Below is a science fair project presented by a girl. In it she took filtered water and divided it into two parts. The first part she heated to boiling in a pan on the stove, and the second part she heated to boiling in a microwave. Then after cooling she used the water to water two identical plants to see if there would be any difference in the growth between the normal boiled water and the water boiled in a microwave. She was thinking that the structure or energy of the water may be compromised by microwave. As it turned out, even she was amazed at the difference..’)

    Dr Bruce Moseley, an orthopaedic specialist at Methodist Hospital in Houston, TX, was convinced of the powerful effect of the human mind medicine on healing.

    He recruited 180 patients with severe knee osteoarthritis and divided them into three groups, two of which underwent true surgery to clear out degenerative tissue and debris. The third group underwent a sham operation: they were surgically prepared, put under anaesthesia and wheeled into the operating room, where incisions were made in their knees, but no procedure was carried out. Over the next two years, none of the patients knew who had received the real operations and who had received the placebo treatment, yet all three groups reported moderate improvements in pain and joint function. In fact, the placebo group reported better results than some of those who had received the genuine operation. The mental expectation of healing was enough to marshal the body’s healing mechanisms. The intention, brought about by the expectation of successful surgery, led to physical change (N Engl J Med, 2002; 347: 81–8). The role of the mind in healing—the subject of Bryan Hubbard’s cover story this month—completely baffles the medical community. Yet, it is well documented that belief in a placebo will bring about the same physiological effects as an active agent—so much so that it causes the drug industry enormous difficulty when designing trials; as so many patients report the same relief and even the same side-effects with a placebo as with the tested drug itself, a placebo is not a true control. How can belief—and, in this case, a wrongheaded belief—affect the outcome of healing? Some clues come from intriguing brain studies showing that the electrical activity within the brain, and between the brain and other parts of the body, is identical whether we are merely thinking about doing something or actually doing it. In weightlifters, for instance, the EEG patterns in the brain that are activated to produce specific motor skills become activated while the skill is only being simulated mentally. Indeed, just the thought is enough to produce the neural instructions to carry out the physical act. In the case of placebos, our bodies don’t distinguish between a chemical process and the thought of a chemical process. According to a major review, the only factor for survival appears to be a belief that the therapy will work and a willingness to follow it religiously. Patients who stick to their doctor’s orders fared equally well whether taking a drug or a sugar pill. In contrast, those who tended not to survive were those who were lax with their regimens, regardless of whether it was a placebo or an actual drug (BMJ, 2006; 333: 15–9). Such studies suggest that our beliefs—about our medicine, about the outcome of a health crisis, about our connections to our place in the world—are a more powerful healer than any diet or exercise programme; they protect us against the worst toxins and the greatest adversity. Knowing this, every doctor now has a duty to never give a negative diagnosis, and every patient has a duty to follow only the regime that he truly believes in.

    The thought it generates in us—whether positive or negative—is our most potent mind medicine. May we always use it wisely.

  • Good Trans Fats vs. Bad Trans Fats

    I’m going to talk about something today that most of you have probably never heard… that there is a distinction between good trans fats and bad trans fats. There is some evidence that the good trans fats can help you with fat loss, muscle building, and even cancer prevention, while the bad trans fats have been shown to cause heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and the general “blubbering” of your body.

    I’m sure most of you have heard all of the ruckus in the news over the last few years about just how bad man-made trans fats are for your health. If you’ve been a reader of my newsletter and my Truth about Six Pack Abs e-book program, then you definitely know my opinion that these substances are some of the most evil food additives of all and are found in the vast majority of all processed foods and fast foods on the market today.

    In my opinion, man-made trans fats are right up there with smoking in terms of their degree of danger to your health. After all, they are one of THE MAIN factors for the explosion of heart disease since approximately the 1950’s.

    With all of the talk about trans fats in the news these days, I wanted to clarify some things, particularly regarding bad trans fats vs. good trans fats. If you’ve never heard of good trans fats before, let me explain in a bit.

    The Bad Trans Fats

    First, the bad trans fats I’m referring to are the man-made kind. These are represented by any artificially hydrogenated oils. The main culprits are margarine, shortening, and partially hydrogenated oils that are in most processed foods, junk foods, and deep fried foods.

    These hydrogenated oils are highly processed using harsh chemical solvents like hexane (a component of gasoline), high heat, pressure, have a metal catalyst added, and are then deodorized and bleached. A small % of the solvent is allowed to remain in the finished oil. This has now become more of an industrial oil rather than a food oil, but somehow the FDA still allows the food manufacturers to put this crap in our food at huge quantities, even with the well documented health dangers.

    These hydrogenated oils cause inflammation inside of your body, which signals the deposition of cholesterol as a healing agent on artery walls. Hence, hydrogenated oil = inflammation = clogged arteries. You can see why heart disease has exploded since this crap has been loaded into our food supply over the last 5 to 6 decades.

    As time goes on, and science continues to unveil how deadly these oils really are, I feel that eventually they will be illegal and banned from use. The labeling laws were just the first step. In fact, certain countries around the world have already banned the use of hydrogenated oils in food manufacturing or at least set dates to phase them out for good.

    However, keep in mind that as companies are starting to phase out the use of hydrogenated oils in processed foods, they are replacing them, in most instances, with highly refined polyunsaturated oils such as soybean oil, cottonseed oil, corn oil, etc, etc. These are still heavily processed oils using high heat, solvents, deodorizers, and bleaching agents. Even refined oils are known to produce inflammation in your body…a far cry from natural sources of healthy fats.

    Don’t be fooled by the new onslaught of foods claiming “trans fat free”… if they use heavily refined oils (even if they’re non-hydrogenated), it’s still pure evil for your body, and very inflammatory. 

    Once again, for the best results, your best bet is avoiding highly processed foods altogether and choose whole, natural, minimally processed foods. Your body will thank you!

    The Good Trans Fats

    Ok, after having trash talked the man-made trans fats, let me clearly state that there is such a thing as healthy natural trans fats. Natural trans fats are created in the stomachs of ruminant animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, etc. and make their way into the fat stores of the animals.

    Therefore, the milk fat and the fat within the meat of these animals can provide natural healthy trans fats (best in grass-fed organic versions only).

    Natural trans fats in your diet have been thought to have some potential benefit to aid in both muscle building and fat loss efforts. However, keep in mind that the quantity of healthy trans fats in the meat and dairy of ruminant animals is greatly reduced by mass-production methods of farming and their grain and soy heavy diets. Meat and dairy from grass-fed, free-range animals always have much higher quantities of these beneficial fats.

    One such natural trans fat that you may have heard of is called conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and has been marketed by many weight loss companies. Keep in mind that these man-made CLA pills you see in the stores may not be the best way to get CLA in your diet. They are artificially made from plant oils in a manner similar to hydrogenation, instead of the natural process that happens in ruminant animals. Once again, man-made just doesn’t compare to the benefits of natural sources.

    Here’s a great site I found that I use to order all of my healthy grass-fed beef and other free range meats.  The service is impeccable and they deliver right to your doorstep in a sealed cooler. It’s worth it to know that you and your family are actually eating meat that’s good for you instead of the normal grocery store junk.

    Now that all of your labels should be listing grams of trans fat, keep in mind that if a quantity of trans fat is listed on a meat or dairy product, it is most likely the natural good trans fats that we’ve discussed here (*I only recommend grass-fed meat or dairy). Otherwise, if the quantity of trans fat is listed on any processed foods, it is most likely the dangerous unhealthy crap from artificially hydrogenated oils, so stay away!  

    One more important note about food labels and trans fat listings… keep in mind that food manufacturers are allowed to label a food “trans fat free” if 1 serving size contains less than 0.5 grams of trans fat.  So you may see some products with hydrogenated oils as one of their main ingredients, but if they make the serving size small enough so that it contains less than 0.5 grams of trans fat per serving, they can label it as trans fat free… now that’s BS!  just another example of our broken system!

    Step #1. Find a venue conducive for relaxation.

    Find a quite room, with a comfortable temperature and set the lights just right (not too dim, not too bright).

    Then… light a candle and incense if you desire.

    Step #2. Surround yourself with sound pleasant to your ears.

    Play some relaxing music. Bring in a portable fountain. Hang some chimes where the breeze blows.

    WHY?

    Because the sound of music is soothing.

    Step #3. Find a comfortable position.

    Surround yourself with the things that make you feel the most comfortable. For example, your pillows, blankets, your favorite pair if joggers, whatever you like.

    A caring, healing sensation always eases stress.

    Step #4. Tell yourself this.

    I am light, I am comfortable, I am at ease with myself.

    All my tensions, worries and anxieties are gone.

    I am light, I am comfortable, I am at ease with myself.

    (Repeat many times while breathing deeply and with your eyes closed.)

    Step #5. Picture what you want your life to be.

    Visualize every detail, every situation that you want to happen.

    Imagine it So… as if it is really happening at this moment.

    Step #6. Repeat step #4.

    Breathe in, breathe out. Now… imagine yourself being surrounded by a bright, luminous light starting from your forehead until it fills the whole room.

    Step #7. Wake Up!

    Simply wake up when you’re ready and feel refreshed.

    Repeat this procedure regularly as needed.

    This exercise simply helps you clear your thoughts.

  • Frozen Crabs & the Blonde Stewardess

     A lawyer boarded an airplane in New Orleans with a box of frozen crabs and asked a blond stewardess to take care of them for him.

     She took the box and promised to put it in the crew’s refrigerator.

    He advised her that he was holding her personally responsible for them staying frozen, mentioning in a very haughty manner that he was a lawyer, and proceeded to rant at her about what would happen if she let them thaw out.

    Needless to say, she was annoyed by his behavior.

     Shortly before landing in New York, she used the intercom to announce to the entire cabin, “Would the lawyer who gave me the crabs, in New Orleans , please raise your hand.

     Not one hand went up …. so she took them home and ate them.

    Two lessons here:

     1. Lawyers aren’t as smart as they think they are.

     2. Blonds aren’t as dumb as most folk think.

    A lady was recently telling us about an endowment policy that she took out with one of the big insurers. If you look at the figures, it doesn’t appear to have been a bad transaction at first glance.

    She’s paying R400 a month for a product that, according to projections, will pay out R500,000 in twenty years’ time. The monthly contributions also get increased by 10% each year, so that they’re kept in line with inflation. It looks good – and don’t forget that it’s being sold by one of the staunch old South African companies to whom just about half the country belongs. They’re also approved by that mighty consumer protector, the Financial Services Board. And bear in mind that these powerful companies have the best actuaries working for them. So there’s therefore no way that this could be a scam. Think again, my dear friends. This is the biggest organised and legalised form of a scam you can imagine.

    Anyone who can do maths can see how the scam works, but I think our people are like lambs being led to the slaughter. They don’t do the maths, they ask no questions, and one day in twenty years’ time they’ll just take the money and say thank-you.

    I want to show you today how to do these simple little sums, but before we get started we first need to reflect on an important assumption here, namely inflation. The government would very much like us to believe that inflation is lower than their goal of 6%, but any housewife will tell you that consumer inflation is higher than 10% per year. Just work out what a trolley of groceries cost you 5 years ago, in comparison to now. For this exercise let’s use an inflation rate of 10%, like the insurance company uses for its annual increase in the contributions.

    Let’s do the maths! All that you do now is take a piece of paper and draw four columns for yourself. Column one is the number of years. Column two is the inflation percentage. Column three is the annual inflated contribution. Column four is the expected deflated value of the endowment policy at that stage. In column three, Contribution, we take the R400 per month and multiply it by 12 to determine the first year’s contribution. That’s R4,800, which is then increased by 10% each year. In column four, Value, we start with the promised, projected payout of R500,000 and decrease it by 10% per year. The reason for this is that money’s buying power decreases each year, thanks to inflation. This is how the table looks now:

    If you now add up all the contributions in column 3 over the 20-year period, it comes to an amount of R274,920. The value you’ve bought with that is that amount of R67,543 in year 20 in column four and NOT R500,000 like they told you. With inflation taken into account you’ve therefore paid R274,920 for R67,543. Would you have made this ridiculous “investment” if you had known what you were buying?

    Do you know how ordinary people do these sums, though? (And this is why the crooks have been getting away with this scam for generations already.) Ordinary people think they paid R274, 920 and got R500,000 out. This is the illusion that the crooks create, and it’s also what it says in the policy documentation. You do get out an amount of R500,000, but then you’re not taking the effect of inflation into account. That is how they legally prey on the unsophisticated and trusting public. With their clever actuaries’ “complex” calculations they bullshit the police, the FSB, the brokerage industry and the public.

    Ordinary people who receive the R500,000 after twenty years think, “What a fantastic investment!” Then they think that the insurance company is wonderful and they’re sorry that they didn’t take out more of these endowment policies when they were young. That’s also the message that people communicate to their children, which is why the crooks get away with it and can carry out the same scam with your children.

    What do they do with your money every month? They invest it in property. That’s why they have such enormous property portfolios – because they pay only R67,543 for a property value of R274,920. Show me a bigger scam!
